Shelf material is spelled out on every rack, and capacity is given per shelf wherever the maker rates it that way, because a 'metal' rack with MDF shelves behaves nothing like an all-steel one.

## What to check before you buy

1. **Per-shelf capacity is the real number**: A rack advertised at 2,000 lb means the total across every shelf, evenly loaded. What matters is the per-shelf figure and whether your heaviest tote exceeds it.
2. **Check what the shelves are made of**: Steel frames often carry particleboard or MDF decks. Those sag under point loads and swell in a damp basement. Wire or solid steel decks don't.
3. **Confirm the assembled depth**: Deeper shelves hold more but eat garage walkway. Measure the aisle you need with a car parked, not with the bay empty.

## Common questions

- **Do I need tools to assemble a boltless rack?** Usually just a rubber mallet: the beams drop into keyhole slots in the posts and lock when tapped down. Bolted units need a wrench or screwdriver, and wire shelving normally clips onto the posts with plastic sleeves. The Assembly line in each listing's specifications says what to expect.
- **Should a tall shelving unit be anchored to the wall?** Yes, especially in a garage or anywhere children climb. A loaded rack is top-heavy, and a strap or bracket into a wall stud keeps it from tipping when someone pulls on a high shelf. Keep the heaviest things on the lowest shelves.
- **Will steel shelving rust in a garage or basement?** A painted or powder-coated finish copes with ordinary garage and basement humidity. What rusts steel is standing water and road salt at the feet, so keep the posts out of puddles — a strip of rubber matting under the feet is enough.
