# Bathtub Tray Size Chart: Tub Width, Rims and Fit

By the Urban Picks team · Updated November 1, 2026

A bathtub tray crosses the tub from rim to rim, so the length of the tub does not decide the fit. Its width does. Two measurements settle it: the opening inside the rims, which the tray has to clear, and the width across the outside edges, which tells you how far it can go. The chart below does the arithmetic for common tub widths, and the rest of this guide covers rims, tubs against a wall, freestanding and corner tubs, using the sizes of the trays we carry.

## Key takeaways

- A bathtub tray crosses the width of the tub, so measure the width, not the length.
- The tray should be at least 2 in longer than the inside opening, which leaves about 1 in on each rim.
- A common 60 in alcove tub is 30 to 32 in wide, so a tray set to 28 to 32 in usually fits.
- Next to a wall the tray stops at the wall; on a freestanding tub the rim carries it, so test it dry.
- Extending trays cover about 27.5 to 41 in, which helps when you buy one as a gift.

## Bathtub tray size chart

Measure your tub across its outside edges, find the closest width below, and set the tray a little shorter than that width. The tray does not have to match the tub exactly: it has to reach past the inside edge of each rim and stop at or before the outside edge.

The widths are common ones, not a rule. Two tubs of the same outside width can have different rims, so use the chart to narrow the choice and the measurements in the next section to check it.

## How to measure your tub for a tray

Measure at the spot where the tray will sit, usually near the middle of the tub. Many oval and freestanding tubs get narrower toward the ends, so a number taken near the drain may not hold at the middle.

Take two numbers. The inside opening is the distance between the inside edges of the two rims. The outside width runs across the outside edges; on a tub against a wall, measure to the wall.

The tray should be at least 2 in longer than the inside opening, which gives about 1 in of support on each rim. Next to a wall it cannot be longer than the outside width, and on an open tub it should not hang far past the rims.

For example, an opening of 24 in and an outside width of 30 in take a tray of 26 to 30 in. A tray that closes to 27.5 in sits inside that range.

## How much rim the tray needs

Aim for at least 1 in of tray on each rim, and more if the rim is flat and wide enough to take it. A flat rim is the easy case. A rolled or sloped rim gives the tray less to rest on, so check that both ends sit level before you fill the tub.

Test it on a dry tub. Rest the tray across the tub with nothing on it, then press down lightly on each end. If it rocks, move it to a flatter or wider part of the rim.

## Alcove, drop-in, freestanding and corner tubs

Alcove tubs stand between three walls. A common size is 60 in long and 30 to 32 in wide, and the back rim runs along the wall. The tray stops at the wall, so open it until it just reaches the wall and keep the front end on the rim.

Drop-in tubs sit in a deck, so the tray can rest on the rim or on the deck beside it. Measure the opening and check that both ends land on a flat surface.

Freestanding tubs, including slipper and clawfoot styles, are open on all sides, so the rim does all the work. Their rims are often narrow or rolled and the tub narrows toward the ends, so measure near the middle and test the tray dry.

Corner tubs vary the most, because the span depends on where the tray crosses. Measure across that spot. Spans above 41 in need our longest tray, which reaches 42.9 in.

## Extending or fixed length

A tray with sliding sides adjusts to the tub, which helps if you move to a new home or buy one as a gift. All four trays we carry extend: three open from about 27.5 to 41 in, and one from 29.5 to 42.9 in.

A fixed tray has one length, so it needs a measured tub. On a narrow tub, look at the closed length first: a tray that cannot close short enough will hang past the rims, however far it opens.

## Tray width and what fits on it

The length decides the fit on the tub. The width, measured from front to back, decides what fits on the tray. Ours run from 7.75 to 8.75 in, so a book on its rest and a glass in its slot sit side by side rather than one behind the other.

Keep heavier items near the rims rather than at the center of the span, especially with the tray opened far. Do not use anything that plugs into the wall on a tray over a filled tub.

## Storing a tray between baths

Wipe the tray after a bath, let the water run off, and keep it where air can reach it so the bamboo dries.

Even closed, a tray is 27.5 in long or more, so plan a spot for it. Our foldable tray has a hinged center that makes it easier to put away. On the other three, the book rest folds down but the tray stays full length.

## Giving a bathtub tray as a gift

If you cannot measure the tub, ask for its width or choose an extending tray: a range of about 27.5 to 41 in covers most of the widths in the chart. For the best chance of delivery by December 24, order by Thursday, December 10. That date gives the best chance, not a guarantee.

For a fuller gift, our square towel warmer holds up to two large cotton bath towels and its timer runs for up to 8 hours. It is for dry towels only, so it warms the towel you reach for after the bath.

Unused items can be returned within 30 days. Return shipping is on the buyer unless the item arrived damaged, defective or wrong.

## Questions

- **What size bathtub tray fits a standard tub?** A common alcove tub is 60 in long and 30 to 32 in wide, and the tray crosses the width. A tray set to 28 to 32 in usually sits on both rims. Check your rims first, because a wall or a wide rim can change the number.
- **How do I measure my tub for a bath tray?** Measure between the inside edges of the rims and across the outside edges, at the spot where the tray will sit. The tray should be at least 2 in longer than the inside opening and, next to a wall, no longer than the outside width.
- **Does a bath tray have to be as long as the tub is wide?** No. It has to reach past the inside edge of each rim and sit level. A tray a little shorter than the tub's outside width is normal.
- **Will a bathtub tray fit a freestanding tub?** Usually, if the rim is flat enough to hold it level. Freestanding tubs often have narrow or rolled rims and get narrower toward the ends, so measure near the middle and test the tray on the dry tub.
- **Will a bath caddy fit a corner tub?** It depends on where the tray crosses the tub. Measure across that spot. Our longest tray reaches 42.9 in and the others about 41 in.
- **How wide are bathtub trays?** Ours run from 7.75 to 8.75 in from front to back. That is enough for a book on its rest beside a glass in its slot. The length that crosses the tub is the number that decides the fit.
