Pet Supplies

A tan-and-white dog and an orange tabby cat resting together on a seafoam-green velvet pet sofa with a scalloped back, on a cream rug in a bright living room.

Furniture for the cats and dogs you live with: floor-to-ceiling cat trees that brace against the ceiling on a small base, four-step stairs up to a sofa or bed with scratching posts underneath, pet sofas with lift-top storage or a zip-off velvet cushion cover, raised dog cots with a removable canopy for the patio, and a hooded litter box with a pull-out tray. Each cat tree gives the ceiling heights its rod adjusts to, and each sofa and cot gives the pet weight and body length it suits, so measure the room and the pet before you choose.

What to check before you buy

  1. 01

    Measure floor to ceiling first

A floor-to-ceiling cat tree stands on a small base and braces against the ceiling with an adjustable tension rod. Measure the height at the exact spot: it has to fall inside the rod's stated range. The rod presses on the ceiling, so pick a flat, solid spot, not a slope or a drop-ceiling tile, and fit any anti-tip strap or bracket that comes in the box.

  2. 02

Size by body length, not just weight

Pet sofas and cots give a body length next to the weight limit. A long, light dog can pass the weight and still hang over the edge, so measure your pet lying stretched out and compare that with the seat or bed size.

  3. 03

Match the stairs to the furniture

The pet stairs here stand about 24 inches tall. Measure from the floor to the top of the sofa cushion or mattress: if it sits well above the top step, the last move is still a jump. Check the floor beside the furniture too, since the stairs take up to about 25 by 17 inches.

Common questions

Can an elevated dog cot stay outside?
Yes, that is what the raised frame is for: it keeps a dog off hot pavement and damp ground, and a mesh bed lets air move underneath. Take the canopy off, or bring the cot in, when strong wind or a storm is coming: a fabric canopy catches wind.
Will my cat use a hooded litter box?
Many cats take to a covered box straight away, and the hood keeps scattered litter inside. If yours hesitates at the door flap, prop it open for the first few days and keep the same litter in the same spot, so only one thing changes at a time.
How do I keep a pet sofa clean?
Vacuum the hair off it every week or so and blot spills before they soak in. A cushion with a zippered cover can come off for washing, following its care label; an upholstered frame is cleaned in place.
