How to Set a Thanksgiving Table: Place Settings, Runner and Place Cards

By the Urban Picks team · Updated

A Thanksgiving table goes together in a fixed order: measure, lay the runner, set each place from left to right, add glasses and place cards, then leave room for the food. This guide walks through each step with the measurements that matter, and with the sizes of our table pieces so you can check them against your own table.

Key takeaways

  • Measure the table and allow about 24 in of edge for each place setting.
  • Lay the runner first, then set each plate about 1 in from the table edge.
  • Forks go on the left; the knife, blade facing the plate, and the spoon go on the right; glasses stand above the knife.
  • Place cards go centered above the plate or on the folded napkin.
  • Keep the centerpiece under about 12 in and leave the middle clear for platters when serving family style.
  • Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026; most orders arrive within about 8 business days.

Measure the table and count the places

Start a day or two ahead with a tape measure. Note the length and width of the table and count the chairs, then allow about 24 in of table edge for each place setting so elbows and serving dishes are not crowded. A 72 in table seats three on each long side, plus one at each end.

Decide now whether the food goes on the table, family style, or on a sideboard as a buffet. Family style needs a clear strip down the middle for platters; a buffet leaves the whole table for place settings and decoration.

Lay the runner first

Everything else lines up on the runner, so put it down before the plates. Center it along the length of the table and let it hang evenly at both ends.

Our plaid runner is 14 in wide and 72 in long. On a 60 in table it hangs 6 in over each end; on a 72 in table it ends at the edges. On a 36 in wide table it leaves 11 in of bare top on each side for the plates. It is 100% cotton in a red, green and cream plaid with mitered corners, and it can be machine washed and tumble dried after the meal.

The place setting, from left to right

Set the dinner plate in the center of each place, about 1 in from the table edge. Forks go to the left of the plate: the dinner fork next to it and the salad fork outside it if salad comes first. To the right go the knife, blade facing the plate, and then the spoon.

The napkin goes to the left of the forks or folded on the plate. If you serve bread, a small plate goes above the forks with a butter knife laid across it. Line up the bottoms of the utensils with the bottom of the plate and keep every setting the same, so the table looks even.

Lay out only what the menu needs. Guests use utensils from the outside in, so nobody has to guess which fork comes next.

Glasses go above the knife

The water glass stands just above the tip of the knife, and the wine glass to its right, a little closer to the guest. Keep the glasses in the same spot at every place so nobody picks up a neighbor's drink.

Our etched wine glasses come four to a set, one each in gold, silver, red and green, so guests can tell whose glass is whose. Each holds about 10 oz and stands about 8.4 in tall and 3.4 in across on a clear stem. Wash them by hand to keep the plated finish.

Place cards: centered above the plate

Place cards settle where everyone sits before anyone has to ask. Set each card centered above the dinner plate, or on top of a folded napkin. Seat the hosts closest to the kitchen so they can get up without squeezing past guests.

Our bell place card holders come four to a set with 12 paper cards. Each card slips into the slots on top of a small iron bell with an antique brass finish. A table of eight takes two sets, and the spare cards can label dishes on a buffet or sideboard.

Keep the centerpiece low

Guests should be able to see and talk across the table. Keep the centerpiece under about 12 in tall, or set a few small pieces along the runner instead of one large arrangement.

If the food is served family style, leave the middle of the runner clear for platters and the gravy boat and move the decoration toward the ends. Unscented candles are the safer choice next to food.

Make room for the platters and gravy

Set the empty serving dishes out before guests arrive to check that everything fits. Our 16 in oval platter measures 15.75 x 10.63 in, so laid lengthwise it fits on a 14 in runner. It is 18/8 stainless steel and 0.75 in high, made for carved turkey laid flat in overlapping slices.

Our gravy boat holds 8 oz, which is one cup, and measures 8.25 x 3.75 x 3.75 in. On a long table, set one at each end, or keep the rest of the gravy warm on the stove and refill the boat as it goes around.

Carve in the kitchen, carry it out in one trip

Carving at the table spreads juices over the runner and the place settings. Carve in the kitchen on a board with a rim, then bring the slices out on the platter.

Our double-sided carving board has a meat grip on one side and a raised rim that collects the juices. It comes in Large, 16.14 x 11.42 in, and XL, 18.54 x 13.15 in. Our acacia serving tray, 19.88 x 14 x 2.5 in with cutout handles, takes the gravy boat, butter and rolls out together. Wash the tray by hand and do not soak it.

Dessert waits under a dome

Clear the dinner plates and used utensils before dessert, then bring out dessert plates, forks and coffee cups, rather than crowding the table with them from the start.

Keep the pie covered and in sight until then. Our cake stand is 12.6 in across and 9.5 in tall with the dome on, with room inside for a dessert up to 10.6 in across and 5 in high. A pie baked in a 9 in pan that measures 10 in across the rim fits under it.

Order early and set the table once before the day

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026. Most of our orders arrive within about 8 business days, so order new table pieces in the first half of November.

When they arrive, wash them and set the table once as a trial. That is when a short runner, a missing serving spoon or a crowded middle shows up, with time left to fix it.

Questions

What is the correct order of a Thanksgiving place setting?
The plate goes in the center about 1 in from the edge, forks on the left, the knife with its blade facing the plate and then the spoon on the right, glasses above the knife, the napkin to the left of the forks or on the plate, and a bread plate above the forks.
Where does a place card go on the table?
Centered above the dinner plate, or on top of the folded napkin. Our bell holders come four to a set with 12 paper cards, so a table of eight takes two sets.
How tall should a Thanksgiving centerpiece be?
Under about 12 in, so guests can see and talk across the table. When the food is served family style, keep the middle of the table clear for platters.
How much table space does each guest need?
About 24 in of table edge per place setting. A 72 in long table seats three on each long side, plus one at each end.
How long should a table runner be for Thanksgiving?
Measure the table and add the overhang you want at each end. Our 72 in runner hangs 6 in over each end of a 60 in table and ends at the edges of a 72 in one.
