Blanket Size Chart: Throw, Twin, Queen and King Dimensions

By the Urban Picks team · Updated

A throw and a bed blanket are sized by different rules. A throw has a usual size, 50 x 60 in, and is made for a lap, a sofa or the foot of a bed. A bed blanket takes its size from the mattress, plus enough extra to hang over the sides. The chart below lists the sizes you will see most often and the closest size we carry, and the rest of this guide shows the arithmetic for checking any blanket against your own sofa or bed.

Key takeaways

  • The most common throw is 50 x 60 in. Long throws run 50 x 70 in and oversized throws 60 x 80 in.
  • Bed blankets follow the mattress: about 66 x 90 in for a twin, 84 x 90 in for a full, 90 x 90 in for a queen and 108 x 90 in for a king.
  • Blanket width minus mattress width, divided by two, gives the drop on each side. Blanket length minus mattress length gives what is left at the foot.
  • For one person on a sofa, 50 x 60 in is enough. For a tall adult lying down or two people sharing, go to 50 x 70 in or 60 x 80 in.
  • A 50 x 60 in throw folded in thirds makes a band about 17 in deep that runs the full width of a queen at the foot of the bed.

Blanket size chart

Sizes are in inches, width first and then length. Makers vary, so treat the typical sizes as a starting point and check the inches on the page before you buy.

The last column shows how our closest size sits, using the standard US mattress sizes: twin 38 x 75 in, full 54 x 75 in, queen 60 x 80 in, king 76 x 80 in and California king 72 x 84 in.

What size is a throw blanket?

The most common throw is 50 x 60 in: 50 in across and 60 in long, or about 4 x 5 ft. Long throws run 50 x 70 in, and oversized throws run 60 x 80 in. There is no fixed standard, so the same word can mean different sizes from one maker to the next.

Seven of our throws are 50 x 60 in. One is 50 x 70 in, and the raised heart throw comes in six sizes, from 28 x 39 in up to 108 x 90 in.

Which throw size for a sofa or chair

For one person sitting down, a 50 x 60 in throw covers the lap and legs with room to tuck in at the sides, and it folds over the arm of a chair between uses.

For someone lying down, the length decides. Laid flat from the toes, a 60 in throw stops 8 in short of the top of the head of a person 5 ft 8 in tall and 12 in short at 6 ft. A 50 x 70 in throw stops 2 in short at 6 ft, and a 60 x 80 in throw has 8 in to spare.

For two people sharing a sofa, look at the width instead. Two adults side by side take up about 40 to 48 in of seat, so a 50 in throw laid across them only just reaches. A 60 x 80 in throw turned sideways gives 80 in across.

A throw at the foot of a bed

A throw is not made to cover a bed, but it works as a band of color across the foot. Fold a 50 x 60 in throw in thirds along its length and you get a band about 17 in deep and 60 in long. On a queen, which is 60 in wide, it runs from edge to edge. On a king, 76 in wide, it leaves 8 in of bedding showing at each side.

On a twin, 38 in wide, the same band hangs 11 in over each side. On a full, 54 in wide, it hangs 3 in over each side.

A 50 x 70 in throw folded the same way is 70 in long, so it hangs 5 in over each side of a queen and leaves 3 in showing at each side of a king.

What size blanket for a bed

A bed blanket needs to cover the top of the mattress and hang over the sides. To check any blanket, subtract the mattress width from the blanket width and divide by two: that is the drop on each side. Then subtract the mattress length from the blanket length: that is what is left at the foot, with the top edge at the head of the bed.

A 90 x 90 in blanket on a queen works out like this: 90 minus 60 is 30, divided by two is 15 in on each side, and 90 minus 80 leaves 10 in at the foot.

Then check the mattress depth. A 15 in drop covers the side of a 12 in mattress and stops 1 in short of the bottom on a 16 in one. If you use a topper, measure the depth with the topper on.

When to size up

If two people share the bed and the blanket keeps getting pulled to one side, go up a size. A 108 x 90 in blanket on a queen hangs 24 in over each side and still leaves 10 in at the foot. A 90 x 90 in blanket on a full hangs 18 in over each side and leaves 15 in at the foot.

Before you size up, measure from the top of the mattress to the floor. If the drop is longer than that, the blanket will pool on the floor, which matters most on a low bed.

How fabric changes the way a size feels

Two throws of the same size can feel very different. GSM, or grams per square meter, tells you how heavy a fabric is. Our faux fur throw with a smooth reverse has a 570 GSM front and a 220 GSM reverse. Our tufted cable throw combines 220 GSM and 260 GSM fabrics, so it is the lighter of the two.

A thick pile also folds up bulkier. Our brown faux fur throw is 0.5 in thick and weighs 3.64 lb, so it takes more room on a chair arm or in a closet than a thin fleece of the same size.

Choosing a throw as a gift

If you do not know the room, 50 x 60 in is the easy size: it suits a chair, a sofa or the foot of a bed. For someone tall, or for a couple, go up to 50 x 70 in or 60 x 80 in. For a bed blanket, find out the mattress size first, because a throw has to fit nothing and a bed blanket has to fit the bed.

Questions

What is the standard size of a throw blanket?
50 x 60 in is the most common size. Long throws run 50 x 70 in and oversized throws 60 x 80 in. There is no fixed standard, so check the inches before you buy.
What size blanket do I need for a queen bed?
A queen mattress is 60 x 80 in. A 90 x 90 in blanket hangs 15 in over each side and leaves 10 in at the foot. A 108 x 90 in blanket hangs 24 in over each side.
What size blanket fits a king bed?
A king mattress is 76 x 80 in, so a 108 x 90 in blanket hangs 16 in over each side and leaves 10 in at the foot.
Is a throw blanket big enough for a bed?
Not to cover a full, queen or king. A 50 x 60 in throw is 10 in narrower and 20 in shorter than a queen mattress. It works as a folded band across the foot of a bed or as an extra layer for one person.
What size throw is good for a couch?
50 x 60 in for one person sitting. For someone lying down, 50 x 70 in or 60 x 80 in covers more of a tall adult. For two people sharing, a 60 x 80 in throw turned sideways gives 80 in across.
What is the difference between a throw and a blanket?
A throw is a smaller blanket kept on a sofa, a chair or the foot of a bed, usually 50 x 60 in. A bed blanket is sized to a mattress and hangs over its sides, from about 66 x 90 in for a twin to 108 x 90 in for a king.
