Towel Warmer Bucket vs. Heated Towel Rack: Which to Buy
By the Urban Picks team · Updated
A towel warmer bucket and a heated towel rack both end with a warm towel, but they do different jobs. A bucket is a plug-in container with a lid that warms dry towels in a closed space. A rack warms a towel on heated bars and can also dry a damp one. This guide compares how each one warms, what it takes to install, how many towels fit and which one suits a gift, then sets the warmers we carry side by side. We carry the bucket type and no racks, so the guide also says when a rack is the better choice.
Key takeaways
- A bucket warms dry towels in a closed container; a rack warms towels on heated bars and can dry damp ones.
- A bucket usually gets a towel hotter; a rack tends to feel warm rather than hot.
- A bucket needs only an outlet; wall-mounted, hardwired and hydronic racks need installation.
- A towel is usually warm after 15 to 30 minutes, and longer cycles add little.
- Fold towels loosely, because a tight roll leaves cool spots.
Bucket or rack: the short answer
Choose a bucket if you want a hot towel when you step out of the shower and you do not want to drill a wall or call an electrician. It plugs in, sits on the floor and moves from room to room.
Choose a rack if your main problem is a towel that stays damp. Air reaches both sides of a hanging towel, so a rack dries it as well as warms it. A rack also adds a little heat to a cold bathroom.
If you want both, start from the job you do every day. A warm towel after a shower points to a bucket. A towel that still feels damp the next morning points to a rack.
How a towel warmer bucket works
A bucket heats a towel inside a closed container. The lid holds the heat in, so the towel warms on every side, not only where it touches a bar.
You load the towel, close the lid and set the timer. Our buckets offer cycles of 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and the timer on our square warmer runs for up to 8 hours.
The towel has to be dry. A closed bucket warms fabric but does not dry it, and our warmers are made for dry fabrics only.
How a heated towel rack works
A rack is a set of heated bars. The towel warms through contact, so it heats where it touches the bars and stays cooler elsewhere. Threading the towel through several bars gives it more contact.
Because the towel hangs in open air, moisture can leave it. That is why a rack can dry a damp towel, a swimsuit or a pair of gloves, which a bucket cannot do.
Most racks are electric, either plug-in or hardwired. Hydronic racks run on hot water from the home's plumbing and are usually fitted during a remodel.
Which one gets a towel hotter
Usually the bucket, because the heat stays in a closed space. Racks tend to feel warm rather than hot, and a thick towel heats unevenly on them.
Time matters less than you might expect. In published review tests of both types, a towel was warm after 15 to 30 minutes, and longer runs added little. With a bucket, start the cycle just before you step into the shower.
Installation, space and power
A bucket needs an outlet and a little floor space. There is nothing to mount, and you can carry it to another bathroom or a bedroom.
A freestanding rack is nearly as easy, though it takes up floor space and can slide if someone bumps into it. A wall-mounted rack saves the floor and needs drilling. A hardwired rack needs an electrician, and a hydronic one needs a plumber.
Use an outlet with GFCI protection, the kind that belongs in a bathroom, and keep the cord away from water. Check the wattage on the label as well. If a warmer draws 500 watts or more, ask an electrician whether your circuit can carry it.
How many towels fit
A standard bath towel runs about 52 to 58 in long and 27 to 30 in wide. A bath sheet, the oversize kind, runs about 60 to 70 in long and 35 to 40 in wide.
Buckets are sized in liters. Our 20 L bucket takes two large bath towels or one personal throw blanket, and our square warmer, about 23 L inside, takes up to two large cotton bath towels. A 10 L bucket is closer to one oversize towel.
Fold towels loosely. A towel rolled tight leaves cool spots, and two towels pressed into a small bucket heat less evenly than one.
A rack's capacity depends on its bars. A small seven-bar rack holds about one standard towel, and larger racks hold two.
Using a towel warmer every day
Load a clean, dry towel before you shower, fold it loosely and close the lid. Take it out when you are ready for it.
Wipe the inside now and then with a soft, dry cloth, and keep damp fabric out of it.
Some buckets take a fragrance disc. Our 20 L bucket has a built-in disc holder; the discs are not included.
Giving a towel warmer as a gift
A bucket is the easier gift, with nothing to install and nothing to measure. Check that there is an outlet near the spot where it will sit.
For a fuller gift, pair it with a bathtub tray. Measure the tub first, or choose a tray with sliding sides.

Questions
- Is a towel warmer bucket better than a heated towel rack?
- It depends on the job. A bucket is better for a hot towel with no installation. A rack is better if you also need to dry damp towels.
- Can you put a damp towel in a towel warmer bucket?
- No. A closed bucket warms fabric but does not dry it. Our warmers are for dry fabrics only, so use a dry towel.
- How long does a towel warmer take?
- Plan on 15 to 30 minutes for a warm towel. Bucket cycles commonly run 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, and in published tests the longer cycles added little.
- Do towel warmers use a lot of electricity?
- Short cycles use little. Check the wattage on the label: a warmer drawing 500 watts for one hour uses 0.5 kWh.
- Will a towel warmer heat the bathroom?
- A rack adds some heat to the room, though it does not replace a heater. A bucket keeps its heat inside and adds less.
- Can you warm a blanket or a robe in a towel warmer?
- In a large bucket, yes. Our 20 L bucket takes one personal throw blanket. Make sure the fabric is dry and the lid can close.
